How to calculate income tax in Pakistan step by step
To calculate salary income tax in Pakistan, start with annual taxable salary, identify the correct fiscal year, find the relevant salary tax slab and apply its fixed amount plus marginal percentage. The final annual tax can then be divided by twelve to estimate an average monthly deduction. The Income Tax Calculator performs these steps automatically, but understanding the method helps you check payslips and avoid common mistakes.
Step 1: identify gross taxable salary
Begin with salary before income tax. Do not use net salary received after payroll deductions. Review basic pay, taxable allowances, commission, bonus, arrears and taxable benefits. Whether a particular item is taxable depends on the law and the facts, so use employer records or professional advice when classification is uncertain.
If the same monthly taxable salary is earned for a full year, multiply it by twelve. A monthly salary of Rs. 320,000 becomes annual taxable salary of Rs. 3,840,000. If salary changes during the year, add the actual taxable amounts for each period instead of multiplying only the latest month by twelve.
Step 2: choose the correct fiscal year
Pakistan's fiscal year runs from 1 July to 30 June. Income earned from 1 July 2026 through 30 June 2027 belongs to FY 2026-27 for this calculator. Income earned from 1 July 2025 through 30 June 2026 belongs to FY 2025-26. Selecting the wrong year can materially change the result because rates and thresholds differ.
Step 3: find the salary tax slab
Compare annual taxable salary with the slab boundaries. For FY 2026-27, Rs. 3,840,000 falls above Rs. 3,200,000 and does not exceed Rs. 4,100,000. The formula for that band is Rs. 316,000 plus 25% of the amount above Rs. 3,200,000.
For FY 2025-26, the same annual salary falls in a band with the formula Rs. 346,000 plus 30% of the amount above Rs. 3,200,000. This shows why an income tax calculator 2026-27 and an income tax calculator 2025-26 can produce different results from the same salary input.
Step 4: apply the fixed amount and marginal rate
Using FY 2026-27, subtract the slab threshold from annual taxable salary: Rs. 3,840,000 minus Rs. 3,200,000 equals Rs. 640,000. Multiply the excess by 25%, which gives Rs. 160,000. Add the fixed Rs. 316,000 to produce annual salary tax of Rs. 476,000.
Do not multiply the entire Rs. 3,840,000 by 25%. The 25% is a marginal rate and applies only to the excess within the band. The fixed amount already represents tax on lower portions of income.
Step 5: check any applicable surcharge
For FY 2025-26, a 9% surcharge is applied to calculated salary income tax when annual taxable salary exceeds Rs. 10 million. First calculate base salary tax, then multiply that tax by 9% and add the surcharge. The FY 2026-27 calculator does not apply this salary surcharge.
Step 6: calculate monthly tax and take-home salary
Divide annual tax by twelve for an average monthly estimate. In the FY 2026-27 example, Rs. 476,000 divided by twelve is approximately Rs. 39,667. Subtract that amount from Rs. 320,000 to estimate monthly take-home salary of about Rs. 280,333 before provident fund, EOBI, loans, insurance or other payroll deductions.
Complete worked example: Rs. 200,000 monthly salary
- Monthly taxable salary: Rs. 200,000.
- Annual taxable salary: Rs. 200,000 multiplied by 12 = Rs. 2,400,000.
- FY 2026-27 slab: Rs. 116,000 plus 20% above Rs. 2,200,000.
- Excess income: Rs. 200,000.
- Tax on excess: Rs. 40,000.
- Annual tax: Rs. 156,000.
- Average monthly tax: Rs. 13,000.
- Estimated monthly take-home salary: Rs. 187,000 before other deductions.
Complete worked example: salary plus annual bonus
Assume monthly taxable salary is Rs. 250,000 and an annual taxable bonus is Rs. 600,000. Regular annual salary is Rs. 3,000,000. Adding the bonus gives annual taxable salary of Rs. 3,600,000. Under FY 2026-27, the applicable formula is Rs. 316,000 plus 25% of Rs. 400,000 above Rs. 3,200,000. Estimated annual tax is Rs. 416,000.
The average monthly tax figure is about Rs. 34,667, but an employer may deduct more in the bonus month and adjust later months. The calculator provides an annualised planning figure, not a promise that every payslip will show the same deduction.
How employer withholding works in practice
Employers generally estimate annual salary tax and deduct it during the year. If salary, bonus or employment information changes, the employer can revise the projected annual liability and adjust remaining deductions. A person who joins mid-year may need to provide previous-employment salary and tax details. A year-end salary certificate is important for reconciling tax withheld with the return.
How to calculate tax for a partial year
If employment begins or ends during the fiscal year, add the actual taxable salary received or expected during that year. Do not assume a full twelve months unless the tax treatment requires an annualised estimate for withholding. The multi-period calculator can divide supported dates across FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27 for planning, but final liability depends on complete annual income and official rules.
What not to include in a salary-only calculation
Do not place rental receipts, business profit, capital gains, dividends, profit on debt or other non-salary income into the salary field without checking how those sources are taxed. A business income tax calculator Pakistan and a rental income tax calculator Pakistan require different deductions, classifications and rates. The salary calculator is intentionally focused so its result remains understandable.
Common mistakes when calculating income tax
- Using monthly income against annual tax slabs.
- Using take-home salary instead of gross taxable salary.
- Applying the marginal rate to the whole income.
- Selecting the wrong fiscal year.
- Forgetting taxable bonus or counting it twice.
- Ignoring the FY 2025-26 surcharge when income exceeds Rs. 10 million.
- Assuming tax liability and tax already deducted are the same figure.
- Relying on an online estimate for a complex return without professional review.
Using an online income tax calculator safely
Check that the calculator identifies its fiscal year, shows the slab formula, explains whether it is official and provides a source. Income Tax Calculator runs the salary calculation in the browser and does not require an account. It is independent and not affiliated with FBR. Review the Pakistan income tax slabs and compare results with official material.
The relevant source documents include the Finance Act 2026, the Finance Act 2025 and current guidance on the FBR website.
Frequently asked calculation questions
Is salary tax based on monthly or annual income?
The slab is applied to annual taxable salary. Monthly tax is normally an annual estimate divided or adjusted across payroll months.
Does moving into a higher slab reduce total take-home income?
No. The higher percentage applies only to income above the new threshold, so additional gross income still increases net income.
Can the calculator determine my refund?
No. A refund calculation requires final liability, actual tax paid or withheld, credits and the filed return.
